Seattle Key Locksmith Metal Hollow Doors

The durability and value-for-money led industries, businesses, and institutions to install hollow metal doors. High on strength and insulated from heat, these commercial steel doors contain different types of cores suitable based on their specific use in different industries and geography. These metal doors continue to remain the mainstay of security at factories, warehouses, malls, offices, workplaces, hospitals, and labs due to their extensive use for doorway access control.

Seattle Key Locksmith metal hollow doors are the most affordable and best in class. Custom made for industrial, commercial, and institutional environs, these fire-rated doors with glass kits or louvers are easier to maintain. Apart from a great collection of reinforced new commercial doors and knock-down doors, we also offer wide-ranging solutions for steel doors, including commercial door repair services.

Hollow Metal Doors: Why The Name

Standard metal hollow doors are made of prime-coated steel sheets with thickness varying up to 1 inch. These sheets are further reinforced by a steel tube that runs at the center and connects both ends on its width at making the door more robust. The tube also provides space to mount hinges and any type of access control locks – magnetic or manual.

The name of hollow metal doors is due to “open throats” on the steel frames of these doors. A door comes with a prefinished metal frame. Each of these frames has metal panels welded on both sides and has insulated material inside. However, frame throats on these commercial steel doors remain open to enable them to get hooked to the wall.

The space between the two metal sheets of hollow door frames is filled with insulating materials. Honeycombs, synthetic polymers, steel channels, and mineral boards are the most popular core materials found inside commercial steel doors. Buyers also have the option of ordering new commercial doors with customized cores.

The fire rating of these steel metal doors with glass kits and louvers ranges from 1 to 6 hours. Buyers may add door-position regulator magnets on top pockets. Seattle Key Locksmith provides smart, extensive solutions to enhance the effectiveness and utilization of commercial steel doors.

Hollow Metal Doors: Make and Materials

Commercial hollow metal doors have steel sheets with thicknesses between 20 gauge and 12 gauge depending on the user environment. Its frame is entirely made from steel, which is differently shaped to develop various door patterns as per the selection of buyers.

Standard hollow metal doors for exterior installation have a sheet thickness of 14 gauge. For interior doors, 16-gauge is the most popular choice. The increase in gauge is inversely associated with the thickness and strength. As the gauge count goes up, metal building doors turn slimmer and this, in turn, has an impact on their robustness.

Steel sheets used to manufacture hollow metal doors are of three types.

  • Cold Rolled Steel: This is the steel that goes into additional processing after it is harvested through smelted iron. The processing enhances its structural, dimensional, and mechanical properties. However, the cold-rolled steel needs a coat of primer to improve its durability. Hollow metal doors made from this steel are the most suitable for interior use.
  • Galvannealed Steel: This type of steel is covered with an iron-zinc alloy coating and is highly resistant to corrosion. A primer coating adds to its anti-corrosive protection. SDI suggests using A40 and A60 types of this steel while making hollow metal doors. Though both varieties can be used for exterior metal doors, A60 provides better silence to wear and tear.
  • Galvanized Steel: This type of steel is made from full zinc alloy enabling the best rust protection. Despite having the best properties for exterior use and the highest durability, commercial steel doors are not frequently manufactured from it. It is expensive, has poor paint adhesion, and causes welding problems.

Seattle Key Locksmith makes commercial metal doors from all types of steel based on customer requirements.

Hollow Metal Doors: The Core Material

The space between two metal sheets on hollow metal doors contains a variety of insulating materials. This filling serves many purposes.

  • It provides strength and durability to commercial metal doors.
  • It enables commercial metal building doors to become fire resistant.
  • It makes hallow metal doors highly resistant to heat and adverse climate.
  • It enhances the pattern and design of these commercial fire-rated doors.

Based on the cost, durability, geography, usability, and fire-rating, the core material of hollow metal doors is of four types.

  • Honeycomb: It is available in both simple honeycomb and added resin core. Though both are heavy-duty cores, commercial metal building doors with the latter have better strength and sturdiness. The insulating material offers a fire rating of between 1 and 3 hours. It is more affordable and budget-friendly among commercial steel doors.
  • Polystyrene or Polyurethane: Both are synthetic polymers made from hydrocarbons. Buyers have the option of getting them in foam or solid form depending on the design, placement, and pattern of commercial steel doors. Polystyrene provides 2 to 3 hours of fire rating.

Polyurethane is costlier but allows better core strength, greater heat insulation, and higher fire rating. Commercial hollow metal doors at heat-sensitive and thermal plants have this core material.

  • Steel Channels: Buyers looking for extremely strong cores have the option to get metal building doors with steel channels spot welded on them. These commercial doors are so stiffened that they can withstand high abuse and stop noises from disturb people working on the other side.
  • Mineral Boards: Though a bit costly compared to the three other core materials, metal building doors with mineral boards have the highest resistance against heat and fire. These boards are capable of transferring heat from one side to another so that those inside can safely move across without any injury. Buyers may select commercial metal building doors with mineral board cores with heating ratings ranging from 250 degrees to 650 degrees.

Based on high-end customer requirements, Seattle Key Locksmith offers buyers hollow metal doors with customized cores. Experts are capable to build cores with materials assuring bullet-proof protection, explosive avoidance, and radiation resistance.

Hollow Metal Doors: The Fire Rating

The selection of commercial fire-rated doors of Seattle Key Locksmith has varied ratings allowing customers to choose the most affordable and suitable ones. These commercial metal doors can stop the fire spread based on their eligible ratings ranging from 1 hour to 5 hours.

Fire rating of metal building doors is a factor to consider based on the user environment, geography, and climate. It also impacts the cost, weight, and durability of these steel doors.
